Best Tablets for Video Calls

Last Updated on September 12, 2022 by Ernest

Nowadays, we are using our gadgets for many reasons, such as gaming, web surfing, sketching, video editing, note-taking, video calls, and video classes.

The craze for taking pictures and videos has increased – we have Facebook, Instagram, and Zoom, Skype, and we all want to look good in our pictures and meetings, and with a bad camera, it’s just not possible. Looking good leaves a good impression, so it makes sense to work on that.

From time to time, I have a video call with my colleagues and friends, and I always use my iPad Pro for this purpose because it has a great camera, and it’s portable and easy to use. Click on a link, and you’re in the meeting.

So, let’s look at the photographic capabilities of popular tablets available in the market. I will take these things into consideration when ranking these tablets: price, camera, size, microphone, speakers, and other features.

1. iPad Air (2022)

ipad air 5th gen

I know, I know, a lot of people will go crazy because I listed iPad Air instead of iPad Pro in the #1 place. But hear me out. Both iPad Air 5th gen and iPad Pro 5th gen have identical front cameras. But guess what? iPad Air is cheaper at $200.

Why would you spend an extra $200? Sure, if you want your iPad bigger because the Pro model offers a 12.9-inch screen and a bit better colors, but we’re talking about the best tablets for video conferences and online classes.

You will have the same functions. iPad Pro has a better display, better colors. It has Face ID a 120Hz screen.

To summarize, if you don’t need processing power, if you don’t plan to do professional art, edit photos, or videos, iPad Air is a better choice. Especially if you want it for video calls, you will still be able to take notes, browser internet, and the other usual stuff tablets and iPads are capable of.

If you put iPad Air & Pro side-by-side, you won’t be able to tell the difference between the cameras.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 12MP (Wide), ƒ/1.8 aperture
  • Rear Video: 4K@24/25/30/60fps, 1080p@25/30/60/120/240fps;
  • Front Camera: 12MP (Ultrawide), ƒ/2.4 aperture
  • Front Video: 1080p@30/60fps

2. iPad Pro 5th gen (2021)

ipad pro 2021 5th gen

iPad Pro 5th gen is an Apple premium series that offers a variety of attributes, such as a 12.9″ screen size with a 1668 x 2388 resolution and high-end processing power.

This tab gives a 12/10 MP pro shooter at the rear end, which can record videos of 4K and 1080P at 24/25/30/60fps. The selfie camera is 12MP and records video of 1080p@25/30/60fps. Apple’s center stage feature follows and focuses the user while moving in a video call.

It’s more expensive than iPad Air. By $200. But for those extra $200, you are getting Face ID, a better screen, a better processor, and other small features. But cameras wise, they are identical.

Looking at yourself through a Facetime HD camera, iPad Pro might look a bit better if you look carefully due to it’s screen, but the camera is the same, so it all comes down to through what screen other people are seeing you.

Overall, I believe for video calling purposes, iPad Air is a better pick. Overall, speaking iPad Pro is superior.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: Triple (12 MP (wide), 10 MP (ultrawide), TOF LiDAR scanner)
  • Rear Video: 4K@24/25/30/60fps, 1080p@25/30/60/120/240fps
  • Front Camera: 12 MP (ultrawide)
  • Front Video: 1080p@25/30/60fps

1.2 iPad Pro – Old Version (2020)

ipad pro 2020

Overall, the iPad Pro 12.9 offers a wide range of advanced features, such as a 12.9″ screen size with 2048 x 2732 resolution, 128GB/256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB storage, and iPadOS 14.5.1.

IPad Pro 12.9 (2020) camera is more capable than the older versions. It is due to the addition of a 10MP ultra-wide camera alongside the standard 12MP rear camera. You can switch to the ultra-wide camera by simply pressing the zoom button.

Its selfie camera is 7MP, including face detection, HDR, and panorama shots.

This tablet shoots up to 4K video from the rear camera. The front-facing camera can shoot video up to 1080p.

Its camera results are relatively sharp and well-balanced. However, it would only work in portrait mode in the 7MP True Depth front camera. The exposure in low light is quite decent, but it is not as good as the Night Mode. Apple has also worked on improving the battery life of this tablet.

The A12Z Bionic chip makes it fast, which is a boon for photographers who prefer editing photos on the tablet.

  • Rear Camera: Dual 12MP, f/1.8 (wide), 10MP f/2.4(ultra-wide)
  • Rear Video: 4K@24/30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/120/240fps
  • Front Camera: 7MP, f/2.4 (also has face detection)
  • Front Video: 1080p@30/60fps

3. Samsung Galaxy Tab S8/S8+/S8 Ultra

Samsung has launched the S8 series in three variants Tab S8, S8+, and the S8 ultra. Let’s discuss each one of them:

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8: It is part of the trio. This model comes with an 11″ TFT screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 2500 x 1600 resolution.

Its cameras provide sharp image quality and shoot videos at 4k resolution equally with the help of 12MP front and 13/6MP rare cameras with auto framing. These camera types fit video calls but not for taking pictures in an open atmosphere. It provides excellent photos and videos with proper lighting.

Also, if you are a person on the go – attending online classes, or doing Zoom calls, we recommend getting the tablet with a cellular(LTE), so you don’t have to worry about finding Wi-Fi.

2.1 Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus – Older Version

SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab S7+ Plus

With solid battery life, compact design, and a great camera, Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ is one of the top picks in most categories.

This 10 x 6.5 x 0.2 inches tablet has a premium finish. It is both thinner and lighter than its competitors. Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 comes with a 2560 x 1600-pixel panel and offers up to 500 nits of brightness.

You will fall in love with the front camera of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7. This 8MP camera can perfectly capture well-balanced and sharp photos. The S7 comes with a 13MP rear camera with a 5MP ultra-wide sensor on the back.

This tab support Pro Video, Single Take, Live Focus, and Night Mode.

This Slate is equipped with one of the fastest processors for Android 10 upgradable to Android 12 – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus. The 12.4” display size tab support 12/256/512 GB internal storage with an expandable microSD slot.

Its battery runs over 10 hours of continuous usage on a full charge and around three days of standby time.

  • Rear camera: 13MP, f/2.0 (wide), 5MP f/2.2(ultra-wide)
  • Rear video: 4K@30fps
  • Front camera: 8MP, f/2.0 (also has face detection)
  • Front video: 1080p@30fps

4. iPad 9th gen

It’s called an entry-level iPad. Did you know it’s the best-selling product Apple has from iPads? It’s a bit slower. The screen isn’t as great as the iPad Pro model, and the colors aren’t that great, but if you compare it to a more premium device, that’s what you will get. Let’s not compare it to a device that’s $500 more expensive.

Overall, the iPad is the most popular tablet in the world, and for a good reason – it’s an amazing device to browse, great for reading, and great for note-taking. You can use a keyboard & Apple Pencil(unfortunately, it’s only compatible with Apple Pencil 1), and of course, it’s good for video calls. It even has that Apple icon home button. And you know what else? It’s quite cheap. You can get a brand-new model for $329.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 8 MP (wide)
  • Rear Video: 1080p@25/30/fps, 720p@30fps
  • Front Camera: 12 MP (ultrawide)
  • Front Video: 1080p@25/30/60fps

5. Microsoft Surface Pro 8

Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is known for its performance, outstanding features, and great design. It comes with Windows 11 home and provides a 13″ Pixel Sense display with a resolution of 2880 x 1920 at a 120Hz refresh rate.

It’s a great tablet, a decent camera, but it’s also quite expensive tablet. And it’s a Windows tablet. It’s great if you have a Windows laptop. Easier to integrate and exchange files between these two devices.

This Slate comes with a 10MP autofocus rear camera which can provide us 4K and 1080P video quality. While on the other hand, the 5MP front camera can only record videos on 1080P, which is also used for Windows Hello face authentication.

This device provides good images and video quality in low light and bright backgrounds.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 10MP
  • Rear Video: 4K, 1080P
  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Front Video: 1080P

6. iPad Mini 6th gen (2021)

ipad mini 6 2021

Please don’t go by its name Mini, as it offers a lot. iPad Mini 6 comes with an iPadOS15, an IPS liquid retina 8.3” display which supports 1488 x 2266 pixels resolution at 60Hz with 500nits of brightness.

It also has the same Facetime HD camera as iPad Pro and iPad Air. It’s even cheaper by $100 than iPad Air. It’s great for video calls. It’s compact. You can even put it in your pocket since it’s 8.3-inches. You can take notes on it, but there’s a bit of a drawback, in my opinion. You can’t get a Magic Keyboard for it. Meaning it’s hard to type notes. But just purely for video calls where you don’t need to do anything else, it’s a good option.

The camera is good, the screen is great, and the size of it is very convenient, but I prefer at least a 10-inch tablet. I felt that the screen was a bit too small for Apple Pencil. If you want to take longer notes, for short quick notes it felt perfect, but other than that, I required a bigger screen.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 12 MP (wide)
  • Rear Video: 4K@24/25/30/60fps, 1080p@25/30/60/120/240fps
  • Front Camera: 12 MP (ultrawide)
  • Front Video: 1080p@25/30/60fps

7. Lenovo Tab P12 Pro

Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is an Android 11-based tablet at an affordable price. It supports web surfing, photo editing, video calling, gaming, etc., because of its powerful snapdragon octa-core processor and Adreno 650 GPU.

This tablet offers us a dual 13MP wide, 5MP ultra-wide lens rear camera that can shoot videos 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps, and dual 8MP wide 8MP biometric sensor selfie cameras 1080p@30fps video quality plus bright and sharp images.

If your purpose is to attend video classes or attend video meetings, it’s a good option. Lenovo P12 Pro is one of the newest Lenovo tablets currently. Overall, it’s one of the best Lenovo tablets I’ve used. Good camera, and great design, loved it, felt very premium, great display, and it was good for note-taking as well.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: Dual 13MP wide / 5MP ultra-wide
  • Rear Video: 4K@30fps, 1080P@30fps
  • Front Camera: Dual 8MP wide, 8MP biometric sensor
  • Front Video: 1080P@30fps video

8. Samsung Galaxy Tab A8

Well, we couldn’t ‘t just end the list without adding a budget option from Samsung, could we? Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 is one of the most popular tablets from Samsung, just like the regular iPad for Apple.

You might ask why I added it to the list since it has a 5MP front camera. I agree the camera isn’t great, but it’s not the worse either. You can still attend online classes with 5MP camera, you can still call your friends, call your family and they will see you. Yes, you can’t really capture great moments and selfies with this camera and get a lot of attention on Instagram, but my point is, it will get the job done.

It’s a budget tablet, and it won’t have the best camera, it won’t have the best processor, the best screen, etc. But it’s good for making video calls, attending online classes, and doing the basic tablet stuff.

Not everyone wants a tablet and take notes on it and edit pictures, some people just want a tablet to watch YouTube, and Netflix, browse the internet and call friends. You can do all of that with Samsung Galaxy Tab A8.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 8MP, AF
  • Rear Video: 1080p@30fps
  • Front Camera: 5MP, AF
  • Front Video: 1080P@30fps

Which tablet has the best camera for taking pictures?

Apple iPad Pro 2021 has better cameras as it offers three rear cameras of 12MP, 10 MP, and TOF LiDAR, which can shoot 4K videos @24/25/30/60fps. You can take pictures for Instagram, you can make TikToks, you can record podcasts, and you can, of course, use it for video conferences.

What tablet offers dual selfie cameras?

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra currently offers dual 12MP cameras with wide and ultra-wide lenses and an auto framing feature. It can shoot videos of 4K@30/60fps and 1080p@30fps.

If you want top-notch quality(Premium), we recommend any of the Top 3 devices – iPad Air, iPad Pro, and Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. All of these devices are incredible for taking pictures, attending video conferences (Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts), and recording podcasts. We recommend getting a Kickstand, or a Tablet/iPad stand, so you don’t have to hold it all the time. It can get heavy on the hands. I personally use Magic Keyboard for my iPad. That does the trick as well.

These are premium tablets, and of course, they also have premium pricing. If you need to go lower – go. Yes, the camera quality won’t be as great, but it’s still really, really good. You will be able to take pictures for Insta, create TikToks, Podcasts, Zoom, Skype, and whatever, and if you’re not a professional, most likely, you won’t see the difference.
